Job Description:    Sr. Electrical Engineer

Packsize is looking for a Sr. Electrical Engineer to join the R&D Hardware Team in Salt Lake City.  We are looking for someone who has an interest in mechatronics and industrial machine automation.  You will be primarily responsible for designing and maintaining the electrical system(s) for highly automated machines as well as providing input on the mechanical design and PLCs.  You will be collaborating with other engineers, product managers, product quality etc….. in creating, building and sustaining reliable, on-demand packaging systems.  We want you to come in and ask well thought out questions, carry out solid fundamental engineering, do independent research and collaborate effectively with your peers. We have many R&D and product sustaining projects going on and look forward to new ideas and diverse,creative thinking to help solve difficult problems.

 

Education, Experience and Skills Desired

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related experience
  • Low voltage DC and high voltage AC experience and qualifications
  • Can create electrical schematics
  • Understanding of machine automation, industrial electrical wiring and associated safety protocols
  • Eplan software
  • Ability to solder and wire up test systems
  • Programming in C/C++, Python, Visual Studio etc...
  • Promotes industry best practices
  • Ensure conformance to applicable equipment specifications
  • Understands sensors related to machine automation, data acquisition principles and creating automated systems
  • Established interpersonal skills to collaborate in team environments while maintaining individual duties effectively
  • Ability to prototype and 3D print simple designs and assemble systems to test automation strategies
  • Demonstrates lean and design thinking disciplines and mindsets
  • Shows curiosity and likes to tinker
  • Experience designing for compliance with electrical safeties standards in both Europe and the US
  • NFPA 79
  • IEC/EN 60204
  • IEC 61508
  • Knowledge of electrical risk assessment considerations such as performance levels of components.
  • Ability to design for EMC compliance, both Europe and US
  • Background in working with servo drives and the design considerations needed to meet compliance.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create electrical schematics and wiring diagrams for new and existing machines
  • Responsible for the design and layout of e-cabinets and industrial panels
  • Assist other engineers in building and testing complex automated machines and subsystems
  • Build and test electro-mechanical systems
  • 3D Print parts
  • Knowledge of PLC’s and industrial automation technologies
  • Writes code appropriate for a specific test
  • Programming and parameterization of servo drives
  • Provide input during design reviews
  • Help with troubleshooting and debugging efforts
  • Assist in writing test plans
  • Engage in continuous improvement activities
  • Work with the team to organize, clean and maintain R&D test area (5S)
  • Maintain prototyping hardware and test equipment
  • Use R&D equipment and other shop tools
  • Troubleshoot machine electrical, controls, and industrial communication problems
  • Working and coordination between trans-atlantic R&D teams in the US and Sweden

 

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Up to 10% travel as needed
  • Ability to do the physical work necessary to fabricate prototypes (using machine shop tools, turning wrenches etc…)
